Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users using these drugs must be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

People who have discontinued the medication report a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if something that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.

The struggle is worsened if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is more common among women than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural support.
