Torrential Rains Exacerbate Conditions for Displaced Residents of Gaza, UN Warn
Heavy storms over the past week have compounded the precarious situation of the hundreds of thousands of evacuated civilians in the Gaza Strip, according to relief agencies.
"Terrible" Weather Creates Grave Risks
A official described the recent storm as "terrible", with precipitation so heavy that around 15cm (6in) of water was seen on the ground.
"These conditions was exceptionally terrible for the families. The heavy rains were so strong... And the gales were so forceful," said the official.
There is grave anxiety that children living in tents in damp garments will succumb to hypothermia and additional illnesses.
Fatalities and Widespread Damage
The health ministry have stated that one baby has succumbed from hypothermia and at least 11 other people have lost their lives in roof cave-ins caused by the severe weather.
Other reports put a increased number of casualties. Authorities stated that several residential buildings had collapsed completely and many others had sustained partial collapse.
- Nearly 55,000 families impacted by the weather.
- More than 40 official safe spaces submerged.
- Many people forced to find new shelter.
Relief Distribution Seen as Not Enough
Agencies have escalated shipments of shelter, warm covers and clothes following the ceasefire began, but they emphasize there is remains not enough aid entering.
"Agencies are working relentlessly to deliver that assistance and to hand it out, but the magnitude of the needs is so immense that we continue to see a great number of individuals and minors who are genuinely suffering every night," stated one spokesperson.
Long-Term Issues and Ceasefire Plans
The second phase of the truce involves arrangements for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with future administration, the withdrawal of troops, and other terms.
Relief groups have stressed the necessity for "greater and continuous humanitarian assistance to meet pressing and ongoing needs."
The hostilities was sparked by an assault in the autumn of 2023. Subsequent military operations have led to a significant number of fatalities in the region, according to health ministry reports.
