Thrice-crowned NBA Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic sustained a "heartbreaking" knee injury when the Nuggets fell 147-123 at the Miami Heat.

The Serbian center was hurt towards the end of the second quarter in an inadvertent contact with teammate Jones.

The other player stepped on the foot of the big man, who promptly collapsed to the court holding his knee.

The star, who tops the NBA season in rebounds and assists, had a score of 21 points and eight assists in the contest before sustaining the injury.

Jokic will have an MRI scan on the following day to evaluate the extent of the injury.

"Right away, he realized there was a problem," said Denver head coach Adelman.

"This happens in professional sports. Any player who suffers an injury, that's tough to see, particularly a player as talented as Jokic. We'll find out more tomorrow."

"We'll move on as a team. Clearly, currently, I am more concerned primarily about Jokic as a person and the disappointment of going through a situation of that nature."
