The Whites Keep The Reds at Bay to Earn Valuable Point at Anfield
Two unbeaten records remained in place at Anfield, but solely one side could derive genuine contentment from the result. Leeds United carried out a textbook game plan of stifling and containing the hosts, with the maiden scoreless draw of Arne Slot's tenure highlighting the persistent issues behind the current champions' recent recovery.
Defensive Masterclass Earns Vital Result
A lacklustre goalless stalemate, the initial in 84 matches for Slot's team, was primarily due to the immense dominance of the excellent defensive duo Jaka Bijol and Pascal Struijk, combined with the Anfield side's inability to break down a well-drilled visitors' defence. The Merseysiders were reduced to speculative half-chances, and a smattering of discontent echoed around the stadium at the final whistle on a laboured display.
"Should I do not use the whole group and we have a schedule like this, I would never do this," the manager explained. "For a player like Dominic I have to protect him. We all are aware his past couple of years was difficult. He is in incredible shape but it's vital I look after him and sometimes the head needs to prevail over the emotion."
The Hosts' Struggle in Front of Goal
Arne Slot's team initially displayed more zip and sharpness than in previous matches, with Jeremie Frimpong prominent on the flank. However, clear-cut chances were few and far between. The home side's primary moments in the first half involved forward Hugo Ekitiké.
- Following a smart exchange with Curtis Jones, the France international cut inside and drew a save from keeper Lucas Perri at his near post.
- The visitors' shot-stopper spilled the shot, requiring a crucial block from James Justin to stop Florian Wirtz converting the loose ball.
- Ekitiké later sprinted clear onto a ball over the top but was held by Jaka Bijol; although not going down, his shouts for a penalty were waved away.
Missed Opportunities Are Costly
Ekitiké's afternoon worsened when he failed to find the net with his best chance. Connecting with a pacy Frimpong delivery in the goal area, the striker misdirected a header that hit the Perri while facing an open goal.
At the other end, their most notable opportunity arrived from an Alisson mistake. The Brazilian shot-stopper sent a careless pass directly to midfielder Ethan Ampadu, whose first-time shot back towards goal was saved by the alert Alisson.
Turgid Final Stages
The match deteriorated into a bitty encounter, devoid on incident. The midfielder, returning from suspension, tested Perri from distance. The resulting rebound led to Ampadu controlling the ball, giving Liverpool a free-kick in a promising area, which Wirtz sent into the wall.
Slot made a three substitution to inject impetus, and moments later Virgil van Dijk went agonisingly close to heading his side in ahead from a corner, his header bouncing just wide the post.
Substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin thought he had extended his scoring run for the visitors in the closing minutes, but his finish was ruled out for a marginal offside call. In the end, both sides had to accept a share of the spoils.
