The network's Premier New Show of This Year Secures a Significant Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.

During the fall season, the late-night programming block saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the network launched a fresh animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. During a period often characterized by bleakness, this show's earnestness struck a chord and propelled it a surprise hit.

A Major Commitment

On December 18th, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."

Executive Acclaim

Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and championed its distinctly quirky appeal.

"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about following this lovable family go about their daily lives.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to evolve comedy past its prevailing layer of irony. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.

“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

Future Seasons

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to experience the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
