The Last of Us Director's Fresh Project That Looks Very Different Yet Expands Upon Familiar Concepts.
The acclaimed co-director responsible for a legendary franchise is crafting his return into game development. His new project, named Coven of the Chicken Foot, marks the inaugural effort for his development house, Wildflower Interactive, a project that will build on the legacy he helped create centered around reactive companion characters.
An Unlikely Duo Embarks on a Unique Journey
Shown for the first time at the 2025 Game Awards, Coven of the Chicken Foot is described as an adventure game blending puzzles and platforming. The game follows an elderly witch, a character who challenges conventional action-game archetypes. The foundational premise stemmed from a desire to deconstruct the typical hero’s journey.
"Imagine if you were without the sword or shield? What if your character was not built for battle? An aging witch, for instance?" asked the creative lead. "This felt incredibly compelling to question the essence of heroism. A hero is about overcoming problems, but also encompasses selflessness and unwavering will."
A Living, Learning Partner Inspired by Past Work
Even though the title looks different on the surface, its groundbreaking system builds directly upon the technology seen in The Last of Us. This whole endeavor was inspired by one pivotal question: "What if I could make a companion character more dynamic and responsive based on player actions?"
Your strange critter partner that accompanies Gertie is far from a scripted follower. It is essentially a curious child which observes and responds through a multi-phase process. Initially, it explores with wonder, potentially leading to silly antics. Next, it moves into a mimicry phase. In the end, it observes and assimilates grasping cause and effect.
- For example: When the partner witnesses an object being placed, it understands the action but not the reason.
- It will then start picking up random objects to see where they go, repeating what it saw.
- The 'why' is learned solely through accidental success an obstacle, creating a genuine learning moment.
Where Every Playthrough Differs
This complex system is designed to create individualized narrative moments. The director emphasizes that Coven of the Chicken Foot functions as a deliberate, discovery-focused adventure instead of a scripted, action-heavy path.
"Anytime I tried traditional three-act structure within this framework, the magic dissipated," Straley explained. "The true vitality of this relationship lies in the fact that you as a player are going to have personal anecdotes and outcomes than I will."
By prioritizing organic narrative born from interaction, this upcoming game marks both a continuation and a bold new direction from the creator's well-known franchises. The project is currently targeting PC platforms.
