The deceased of a mother aged 34 and her 10-year-old daughter have been discovered inside freezing appliances in an residence in western Austria.

The victims, a Syrian woman and her daughter, who had been unaccounted for for several months, were found on the end of last week. The cooling units were hidden behind a plasterboard wall in the apartment, located in the city of Innsbruck.

A pair of males, a 55-year-old Austrian and his 53-year-old brother, were arrested in June. The older man, a colleague of the Syrian woman, stated to law enforcement last week that there had been an unfortunate event—but rejected intentional killing.

Addressing journalists recently, a representative for the legal authorities said the pair were being held on "serious suspicion of intentional killing".

Personal details of those involved have not been released by police, in compliance with national regulations.

The vanishing of the mother and child was first reported by the female victim's relative, who resides in Germany, on the 25th of July last year.

Authorities revealed the male associate claimed at the time she had embarked on an prolonged visit with her child to travel to her relatives in Turkey.

The victim's bank card was then found to have been used in foreign locations repeatedly.

However when investigators searched the victim's residence, her mobile phone was found.

An individual also claimed hearing a loud noise in the dwelling, and screams of "mother" on the date the pair were believed to have vanished.

An expanded criminal probe was started, with authorities uncovering multiple communications transmitted via the mother's device—including a job termination message to her workplace and texts to the 55-year-old suspect.

Authorities said a significant cash transfer was also moved to the individual.

Katja Tersch told reporters on that day that a rented space had been rented out before the victims' disappearance and a cooling unit had been installed within.

The two suspects took out the freezer from the unit on the very day the woman and her child went missing, Tersch stated. And a shortly afterward, they acquired an additional appliance.

Authorities believe they believe this points to the fatalities were premeditated.

"The cause of death remains unclear due to the condition of the remains," she said.

Mayr—from the legal authorities—stated the specific order of occurrences is still unclear, but the bodies were carefully placed and not discovered during a prior examination.

While the men were detained in June, it was only on the 12th of November that the suspect acknowledged an incident and to hiding the bodies. He rejects any plan to cause death, authorities stated.

In a related development, his younger brother acknowledged a concealment but disputed awareness of a homicide.

The two suspects are at this time in custody awaiting trial in jails in Innsbruck and Salzburg, situated at a distance.

Through a combined announcement, Austria's Minister for Women and the top legal representative said the "alleged double murder... constitutes the abrupt and violent termination of two human lives and reveals a cruel system".

"Females of all ages are falling victim to homicide due to the mere fact that they are female," they continued.

"Femicides are a strongly established and widespread concern that we must combat firmly."
