NY Unveils Reporting Tool for Public to Submit Immigration Videos After Arrests of 4 US Citizens
The state attorney general has introduced a recent reporting form encouraging citizens to submit visual evidence of ICE operations around the state. This step follows a day after a significant ICE raid shook Chinatown in Manhattan, sparking mass outcry.
US Citizens Detained During Enforcement Action
A US congressman announced during a news conference that four American citizens were detained and detained for "about 24 hours" following Tuesday's raid. Demonstrations broke out in New York on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
"Each citizen deserves to live without fear," state officials declared in a statement.
"For those who saw and documented federal operations recently, I ask you to submit that material with the authorities. We are committed to reviewing these submissions and investigating any legal breaches."
Form Details
The portal provides spaces to submit photos and videos of the raid, plus a field to specify geographic details. When submitting, users must mark a box that acknowledges that "the office could utilize any materials, images, or footage in a official report, including in a lawsuit or government document."
Information about the Manhattan Operation
The Chinatown raid, which observers say featured over fifty government officers, occurred in a famous area of the city where counterfeit products and merchandise are sold daily widely – often to sightseers.
Recordings of Tuesday's raid reveal several hooded and equipped federal agents restraining and arresting a individual, and pushing back onlookers. Masses of residents trailed the officers through the streets. An military-style transport was observed traveling down the city streets.
Official Reactions
At a Wednesday press conference held with the New York immigrant rights coalition, the congressman, a Democrat, stated that four American citizens were arrested by immigration for about 24 hours and that there were "no circumstances where four American citizens should be arrested for without cause." He said the persons were freed on the following day with no legal action taken.
"There's a clear purpose here. It is not about removing offenders," Goldman remarked. "This is a military-style operation to create conflict. It is purely a pretext to generate turmoil for federal officials to utilize the armed forces to halt conflict that they themselves caused."
Widespread Condemnation
Outrage over the immigration operation escalated – each of the mayoral candidates condemned the operation, as did the state leader.
"Yet again, the federal government chooses heavy-handed tactics that instill panic, rather than security. It must stop," a contender stated.
The city's advocacy organizations voiced concern also.
"Federal officers descended on Chinatown in NYC with military-style vehicles, covered personnel and tactical gear to go after local sellers trying to make a living. This action had no relation to citizen protection and focused completely on intimidating residents and neighborhoods," remarked the president of a major immigrant coalition.
Agency Rules
Official guidelines prohibits the detention of US citizens and the organization has stated it will not apprehend US citizens. Yet, investigative journalism has found that more than 170 American nationals have been detained unlawfully by ICE since the start of the existing leadership.
Ongoing Trend
ICE raids have been becoming more common in NY and across the US this year.
A mid-October raid in midtown Manhattan was the earliest reported action on an housing center of the present government. Demonstrations against ICE are commonplace including accusations of force and inhumane treatment.
Most recently, a document filed by advocacy organizations stated inadequate care of expectant mothers in detention centers.
