Meteorologists have indicated an icy beginning to the new year, with snow expected throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants are advised to wrap up as bitterly cold temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Festive Celebrations Go Ahead In Spite of Warnings

The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay celebrations are planned to take place, following last year's postponement. This proceeds amid weather alerts for snow in northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so additional clothing will be necessary," stated the Met Office.

Fireworks Under Mostly Clear but Chilly Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is likely to be ideal for fireworks celebrations, with no rain and open skies. Readings are due to be chilly, making extra layers vital, said forecasters.

Further north, skies will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for seeing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Widespread Weather Alerts for Friday

Heading into Friday, weather warnings have been issued across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

Temperatures Set to Plummet Even More

As 2026 begins, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are expected to drop further as wintry showers and strong winds are expected to batter the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is expected to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Medical Alerts Activated

At the same time, serious cold weather health warnings have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials said this indicated the weather could to lead to notable consequences across medical and care provision. This encompasses a potential rise in the mortality rate among the elderly or unwell or those aged 65 or over.
