Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during a recent discussion.
“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”
It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “But I will say this, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. Once more, that reassures me, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”
Authorities shared security footage Monday of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack remains under investigation and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt according to reports.
The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday near MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a newborn.
“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd was inactive during the current season, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.
He signed with New York as a free agent in March and was projected as an important component of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on August 2 and had to be helped off.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while healing from his surgery.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “Certainly, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, from Texas, began his career with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He joined Arizona in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
