A Story of Surprising Generosity: The Time a Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dorm Ground
During 2006, My journey took me to Canberra for an admissions interview for medical school. I figured to arrange lodging when I arrived, but when I arrived, a major event was taking place and every single budget hostels and affordable lodging were completely sold out.
Hailing from the city-state of Singapore, I thought maybe I could spend the night at the terminal – only to discover Canberra airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, is not open around the clock. Not knowing how to proceed and growing worried, I hopped on a bus into town and found myself drifting near the casino, believing it was a place to spend the evening somewhere operating through the night. Admittedly, this plan in the ideal condition for nailing an interview the next morning, yet, as a broke student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.
Our society requires more people with such compassion.
I must have looked out of place because a young woman saw me loitering in the city and inquired whether I needed help. I explained my situation and right away she suggested I was welcome to sleep on the ground in her student dorm at the Australian National University – which was perfect, given that my my medical school interview was scheduled for the next day. Generously, she also provided some food: one sandwiches she brought back her work shift. This gave me a hot shower and a secure location and safe to sleep.
With hindsight, it’s clear to me what a big chance she took being a woman letting a guy who was a complete stranger stay in her room. Back then I existed within a bubble of male privilege and not even thinking to such safety concerns. Now, as a father, I am astonished she offered that help – and remain deeply appreciative.
Ultimately, I did not go to that university, and I never saw that kind stranger again, yet her memory has stayed with me her amazing act of kindness. It is my wish life has repaid her good deed abundantly. We could all use more individuals like that woman.
